3DS?????

Mario Poked My Eye Out!

Most of us wait with bated breath for news regarding a new console. We scout the Internet and read magazines hoping for that rumor or article on the next big thing.
As most of you may know by now the big N (that’s Nintendo for you noobs) just announced their newest portable console the 3DS. They are taking the leap into 3D with the DS.  For some this might be exactly what they have been waiting for. Imagine your games in 3D without the aid of those goofy glasses. But for me, I approach this announcement with trepidation. This sounds eerily familiar as to rumors that were leaked about Wii. Now don’t get me wrong the Wii is wildly successful. The Wii does have a catch though, and that is for the hardcore gaming public (I’m not talking about your 50yr. old dad who suddenly plays the golf game on Wii) the Wii is not the place for the best games out there. If you want a gimmicky game or games only Nintendo makes, you are happy. But If you are like me and you love GOW/Final Fantasy/Mass Effect etc. you probably watch the dust grow on your Wii. This is why I wonder about this 3DS, is this new DS going to deliver the next great portable game series like Ace Attorney or Trauma Center or will we be getting a lot of gimmicky titles trying to make you ooh and aah at the fact that you can maneuver the system around and see in 3D?

(P.S. if you want to share your feelings on this article leave me a comment, I will respond to you.)

I’ve been reading on Kotaku about this and while I am intrigued there’s one big catch that will keep me from upgrading and that is currently Nintendo has your DL content tied to the system and not to the account. It would take more than just a 3D gimmick to make me upgrade my system because of that and I’ve only bought a few different applications, somewhere between $10-20 worth and still I’m not willing to loose it. I assume that they will continue with more content like that, which I enjoy, but when I buy content I want it to be mine and right now it doesn’t feel that way.

I understand how a lot of people will feel the same way, and actually that sucks! I don’t own a DSi but Bryan does. I might buy the 3DS since i skipped that generation. I’m not sure if Bryan has bought any DL content yet.

I hate how Nintendo has created that problem. Both Microsoft and Sony have some way of transfering your data to a new system but Nintnedo chooses to lock that content with both the Wii and DSi. I’m interested in the 3DS simply because it creates a standalone system for 3D that doesnt require any extra equipment (i.e. glasses, new tv). I still don’t understand everyones push for 3D though. Maybe i’ll want one myself when Hamu-chan gets it.

I totally agree with you Paige. The fact that you can’t transfer the DLC you purchased is a major downside to upgrading. In my opinion Nintendo is running a distant third behind Sony & Microsoft when it comes to online and your game system. They aren’t going to be successful in the future if they do not consider how important going on line with your game system is.
