The Absence of Freedom

limited edition

Two days ago Hamu-chan received an e-mail notifying her that she was the lucky winner of Torne.  Japan announced that it had reached the 5 million registered users mark on its region’s PSN and to celebrate, Sony was giving away prizes to anyone purchasing content on the PSN over 600 yen (~$6).  Well Hamu-chan did just that and she was selected.  Unfortunately for us, Torne only works with Japan broadcasting.  So for the meantime it will be living happily at her mother’s house in Japan.

Torne

This got me thinking though how often the US is overlooked when it comes to releasing unusual or unique game products.  I believe many gamers are like me and want to be given the freedom to choose the color of their system or optional accessory.  Other countries (namely Japan) are given these options early on and rarely do we see them cross over to our region.  And it’s not just limited to console colors, but collector’s editions and specific games.

Jump Ultimate Stars

Not in US, but why? Anime is popular

Game companies may think that Americans do not like options and see certain games as unprofitable.  But obviously that is not the case when Nintendo decides to release another DS color.  Gamers will often take a loss on a trade in just to obtain that color they always wanted.

With the release of Torne in Japan and PlayTV in Europe, why is it so hard for Sony to release and US compatible version.  I may be unaware of some FCC guidelines that are preventing Sony from entering the market but I don’t see it being any different then Tivo.

Big Boss Bundle

One rare time US gets a good collectors edition

So coming back to the subject of freedom and choice,  what game/ accessory/ limited edition item have you wished was released in the US.  Let us know in the comments.  We all know Kyo13 was happy Konami did not hold back.

  1. […] Japan, the PS3 can record your TV shows much like a DVR using the Sony device called Torne.  The device came out in March of this year and has been selling like crazy ever since. […]

It really is a shame of the industry in the US. Instead they often try to milk money from slow releases of new console colors for the DS. I hope there are a fair amount of choices when the 3DS hits.

Actually, there is a good reason why Jump Superstars was never localized. The various series that the anime crossover game contains have all been licensed by different companies in America. The Licensing fees would be exorbitant, if not entirely impossible.

Good point and it almost happened with Tatsunoko vs. Capcom but thank god they pulled all the licences together.
